This saree, from West Bengal, is extremely comfortable. The warp and weft both are mill yarn. The color combination is rich and elegant.
Middle border, also known as pachha phere in Bengali, encircles the hips and runs across the length of the saree. In olden days women often chose to wear this saree as it accentuated their curves. The efforts are on to revive such sarees.
The product is designed and produced by an artist called Biren Basak. His ancestors migrated from Bangladesh leaving everything behind except for their skill to weave. They started weaving again and slowly and gradually started employing other weavers in their area. Today he boasts of employing 10,000 people and not many wants to leave this job. He ensures people are paid well and are taken care off when in need.
